From the Bahamas to the US: Meet Redd!

If your heart has room for one more, Redd is in need of a forever home. All the way from the Bahamas, this handsome boy has travelled far and wide to find a loving family to call his own.

In the Bahamas, Redd was an island stray or as the locals say, a “potcake.” Thankfully, the compassionate people at Abaco Shelter rescued Redd, as well as the rest of his litter of brothers and sisters, from the streets in 2015.

Redd’s rescuers quickly noticed what appeared to be a congenital bone defect in his legs. At only 8 months old, Redd’s only chance of survival was leaving the Bahamas and receiving the medical care he so desperately needed. That is when they called Mr. Bones & Co. and Rescue the Runaway, an animal welfare nonprofit right over the bridge in New York City! At the time, Mr. Bones & Co. was completely full and lacked necessary resources to care for Redd’s special case. Determined to get Redd the help he needed, Abaco Shelter contacted Mr. Bones & Co. a short time later. This time, Mr. Bones & Co. agreed to help, still full and broke, but their dedication and love for animals made it happen.

Just before Christmas, Redd boarded an airplane and flew to North Carolina where he temporarily stayed in a foster home with an entire litter of potcakes! From there, he began his journey to New Jersey thanks to Carolina Babies Dog Transport. You can imagine how scared and confused Redd was after travelling with strangers to so many new and strange places!

On Saturday, January 9th, Mr. Bones & Co. brought this sweetheart to Pure Paws Veterinary Care where he was examined inside and out by Dr. Stephanie Liff and her team of trained veterinary professionals. It turns out Redd’s congenital bone condition is seen in many Basset Hounds, but surgery is likely not needed. We suspect he is a perfect Basset Hound and German Shephard mix.

Now, this brave boy is in foster care outside of the noise and commotion of New York City and in a calm suburbia of New Jersey.  Although Redd is shy and timid at the moment, he is a very sweet boy that just needs to open up and feel safe in a loving and gentle home!

He travelled so far for a forever home – could that be with you?
